It started embarrassingly small. A short film about the shepherds, made for a church Christmas service in 2017. People did not just like it, they shared it until millions had seen it. So director Dallas Jenkins asked a wild question: what if a series about Jesus was made like the shows people actually binge?
Nobody in Hollywood paid for it. Everybody else did. Over 16,000 ordinary people put in 11 million dollars, the largest crowdfunded media project in history. No studio, no network, no ads: just people who wanted this story told well.
And it is free. On purpose. A pay-it-forward model keeps every episode free in the app, translated into more than 125 languages, with over 350 million viewers reached in 190+ countries. When the world sat at home in 2020, this was one of the few things that quietly exploded: a free series about hope.
